We compare and contrast brands, styles and offer you tips to help you find best safety razor for beginners.

A Few Things to Consider

Before you select a safety razor, here are a few things to consider:

  • The Right Blade? As a beginner, naturally you aren’t familiar with all of the styles.

Long handle, short handle, fat handle or thin handle?

Two-piece, three-piece, silo or butterfly doors? Honestly, it’s going to take some trial and error and you might have to try a few blades until you find the right one.

We’ll help you navigate through the different styles and models below.

  • Benefits. There are plenty of reasons to use a safety razor, the biggest one being that you will create less waste. Just change the blade when it gets dull (which is recyclable) instead of using and throwing away countless disposable razors.

You’ll also save money since you won’t need to continue buying disposable ones. They last longer, too!

Types of Safety Razors

There are three types of safety razors:

  • One-Piece. As the name suggests, this is one single piece. There are two “doors” that protect the blade and in order to expose it, simply twist the base of the handle. The doors are sometimes referred to as “butterfly” doors or “silo” doors.

Some aren’t fond of these razors because the cream and residue can build up around the doors and the hinges, which makes it hard to open and close, so you’ll need to make sure it is thoroughly cleaned and dried between each use.

  • Two-Piece. The two-piece razor also requires you to twist the base of the handle, but instead of opening doors, this loosens the blade so you can pop it out when you need to change the blade.
  • Three-Piece. To open this razor, you twist off the entire handle and then separate the two head pieces. You’ll then “sandwich” the blade between these two pieces and tighten the handle back on.

For both the two-piece and the three-piece, you’ll shouldn’t tighten the handle too much when you reassemble. This can damage the blade or move it out of alignment.

As a beginner, start with a one-piece blade to see how it feels. If you don’t like it, have a go with a two-piece or a three-piece to see which you like!
