Razor Design
When you need to change the blade, you just open the razor, take out the old blade and pop in the new one, right?
Yes, but not all razors are designed equally. The way that you open the razor varies between models, so here are your options:
- One-Piece. The one-piece razor has two “doors” – called “butterfly” doors or “silo” doors – that keep the blade in place. When you’re ready to change it, you just twist the base of the handle in order to expose the blade and remove it.
Cleaning a one-piece razor isn’t hard, but you’ll need to be thorough. Cream and skin residue tend to build up around the hinges and the “doors,” and if you don’t clean them well enough, the gunk build-up will make it hard to open and close the razor.
- Two-Piece. The top of a two-piece razor has a long screw that threads into the handle itself and is secured at the bottom of the handle. When you’re ready to replace the blade, loosen the knob on the bottom and then turn the razor upside down so that the top piece falls out. You’ll notice that the base (the part that the blade sits on) is attached to the handle and won’t fall out when you unscrew the top.
- Three-Piece. These razors “sandwich” the blade in on the top. Unlike the two-piece, there is no release knob at the bottom of the handle. The two pieces that sandwich the blade both come out when you loosen them (vs. the three piece where the base was attached to the handle).
That means that the top, the base and the handle are all separate (three pieces).
You’ll also find that there are different razor head designs: open comb or closed comb.
- Open comb heads have larger teeth that are spaced further apart, exposing more of the blade. Great for thick, coarse facial hair.
- Closed comb heads provide you with a gentler shave and there’s less likelihood that you’ll cut yourself. Great for beginners or those with sensitive skin.
