6 Best Beard Dyes 2022
You have the beard oil and the beard balm. A few types of razors, rotary and foil shavers, shave gels, aftershave and hydrating lotion. And now, as if all of your products and beard care efforts weren’t enough, you need to add one more product to the pile: beard dye.
You may just be in need of a more uniform look (your beard color matching your hair color) or you might need to hide a few grays to give you a more youthful appearance. Whatever your reasons are, you’re going to need a good, quality dye.
We’ll show you the basics when it comes to choosing the best beard dye and help you navigate your way through the products. We have great tips for both first-time dye users and experienced pros who are on the lookout for a new brand.
Before You Choose
Here are a few things to take into consideration before you choose:
- How Long It Lasts. Some dyes last around two weeks and others will last a few months. While the labels do provide you with this information, you should also remember that the frequency of your washing and the other types of cleaning products you use on your beard will have an effect on this.
- Try a Few Brands. Even if you have luck with one brand, it might be worth it to switch to another brand (if they products don’t cause allergic reactions) in order to see if one works better than the other on your beard.
Beard texture and hair thickness will all effect the efficiency of the product on you, so remember this as you shop!

Choosing Your Color
Probably one of the hardest parts of the process is finding the right color.
While all products have tips and suggestions on the back of the box on how to go about choosing, it’s still easy to mess up on those in-between colors. Light brown or dark blonde?? How do you choose?
Here are a few tips:
- We’d avoid going too dark if we were you. Go for the lighter one and see how it looks. You can always go a shade darker if need be.
- Alternatively, you could opt for the darker one and then rinse it off sooner than the box recommends. This is kind of hit and miss, though, so probably best for those of you who already have experience with dyes.
Slow down and Do the Test Patch
One of the fastest ways to get yourself into trouble with a beard dye, or any dye for that matter, is skipping the test patch.
There’s only one way to find out if you’re allergic to a product and that is by testing a very small, unnoticeable patch of hair. You could do this on the face, but we suggest doing it on an unnoticeable part of your arm hair or even on the legs.
Henna dyes are always a great choice for those of you with sensitive skin because they are made of all-natural ingredients. Read more about our favorite one below.
Top 3 Best Beard Dye Reviews
1. Mustache and Beard Brush-In
Just For Men makes, by far, the best beard dye products out there for most men.
They have a wide range of colors, making it easy for you to get an accurate match, and we like that you don’t have to use the entire contents of both tubes when dying a shorter beard. You only need equal quantities of both and then use the brush to mix them together.
This is an ammonia-free formula, which helps those coarse facial hairs absorb the color better. One application will last about two weeks.
While this is great for a lot of guys, it might not be the right one for you. If you’ve already tried this brand and had no success or an allergic reaction, check out our next two suggestions.
2. RefectoCil Cream Hair Dye
RefectoCil has a different approach to the coloring system. They give you plenty of colors to choose from but also give you some tips of which colors to mix if you’re looking for a more custom match. The color lasts up to 6 weeks on some, which is a big difference compared to the Just For Men above!
One thing we don’t like about this is the fact that you have to purchase the brush (or wand) separately.
3. Hair and Beard Color/Dye
Finally, we have the Henna Guys dye: the alternative for those of you who can’t use the other chemical-based products. This is as natural as they come since it’s made from the henna plant!
It contains no pesticides, no chemicals and no metallic salts.
You may need to purchase a few tools (just like the RefectoCil cream above), but this is certainly the perfect alternative to those who can’t or don’t want to use harsh chemical products.
